KernelCare Features

KernelCare is a live kernel patching service that provides security patches and bug fixes for a wide range of popular Linux kernels, which can be installed without rebooting the system.

  • The KernelCare agent resides on the user's server. It periodically connects to the KernelCare distribution servers. If new patches are available for the currently running kernel, the KernelCare agent downloads and applies those patches to the running kernel.
  • A KernelCare patch is a piece of code used to replace vulnerable or buggy code in a kernel. It can be an arbitrary change to a line of code, or it can be a missing security check, a set of functions, or even changed data structures.[3] The patch is compiled as usual, but the generated code contains additional information about all the changed code pieces caused by the change to the original source code, and information about how to apply these code pieces. The resulting code changes are safely applied to the running kernel.
  • A special KernelCare kernel module applies the patches. It loads the patches into the kernel address space, configures relocations (i.e., corrects references to the original kernel code and data), and safely switches the execution path from the original code to the updated code blocks. The code ensures that the patch is applied safely, so that the processor does not execute the original code blocks at the same time it switches to a new version.

CloudLinux OS Explained

The CloudLinux operating system offers a modified kernel based on the OpenVZ kernel. The main feature is the Lightweight Virtual Environment (LVE) – a separate environment with its own CPU, memory, IO, IOPS, number of processes and other limits.[4] Switching to the CloudLinux operating system is done via a provided cldeploy script, which installs its kernel, changes the yum repositories and installs basic packages to enable LVE to work.

  • Mod_lsapi – This is the fastest PHP handler for Apache. It is a drop-in replacement for SuPHP, FCGID, RUID2 and ITK. It has a small memory footprint and understands PHP .htaccess directives;
  • MySQL Governor – An extension of the above feature, MySQL Governor tracks CPU usage and disk I/O for each user in real-time. If a user exceeds the assigned limits via MySQL queries, they are throttled until they are back within the limits;
  • CageFS – Last but not least, CageFS is essential when it comes to a shared hosting environment. It ensures that users (accounts) on the same server have no way to interact with each other. It prevents a user from seeing each other or viewing their files. In other words, it can stop the spread of malware from one user to another and also ensures complete isolation and security of one user's files from another.
